Nine Ways to Elevate Women at Work
Posted on Mar. 1, 2023 / Subscribe 0
According to Zippia, 64 percent of public relations professionals are female, so odds are you work with plenty of women in your job. With March being Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day coming up on March 8, it’s a great time to consider how to support women in your organization.
There are so many ways to support, advocate and elevate women at work. Here are nine ideas to consider:
1) Offer to be a mentor to women at work.
“I’d like to set up a monthly lunch to talk about your goals and professional journey.”
2) Ask for mentorship from women who inspire you (up and down the hierarchy).
“I admire the way you speak confidently in leadership meetings. Could we get coffee sometime so I could get some tips from you?”
3) Ask women what their professional goals are and support them however you can.
“What are you working towards right now, and how can I support you?”
4) Give kudos and accolades when deserved and in the way the honoree would like to receive them (publicly, through a hand-written note, one-on-one conversation, etc.)
“Thank you, Susan, for your on-site management of last week’s event.”
5) Offer flexible work environments to support outside-of-work commitments.
“Let’s develop a schedule so you can flex to take care of your mom.”
6) Encourage women to apply for promotions and advocate for themselves.
“I think you should apply for the director position because...”
7) Offer concrete feedback to women on your team about what works well in addition to what could be improved.
“I appreciate your project recaps because they help us improve our future planning.”
8) Amplify other women’s voices in meetings.
“What are your thoughts about switching vendors, Vicky?”
9) Evaluate your personal biases and work on them to ensure you can support women to the best of your ability.
I feel so much gratitude to have incredible female mentorship and leadership and a fantastic executive board for our Chapter.
Have a wonderful month celebrating the incredible women in your professional and personal life!
