A Day in the Life of a PRSA Detroit Intern

As I approach the sixth week of my internship with PRSA Detroit, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on my experience so far. I’ve developed many skills, faced some challenges and continue to learn new concepts every day. I wanted to share these bits, along with what an average day looks like for me.
Wake Up and Tackle the Day
My workday begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m. There is a lot to accomplish. I wake up, grab a cup of coffee— a necessity— and crack open my laptop to plan for the day
It is vital to have a plan before jumping into work. Having action items prepared before starting my day allows me to stay organized. I look over my calendar and start writing out my daily tasks. Once assigned, I jump head-first into completing them.
By 10:00 a.m., I am ready to tackle my daily tasks. My tasks range from drafting social media copy, writing blogs, attending meetings, and assisting committees when needed. No two days are the same, which makes it more exciting.
Drafting for Social Media
One of my responsibilities as an intern is to draft social media copy for each of our platforms, like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. This part of my day is exciting because I have the opportunity to learn the chapter's tone of voice.
One day, I had the chance to live-tweet an event on the Chapter’s Twitter account. While I have not done anything like that before, it was a fun challenge and has helped me feel more confident working with social media.
Blog Writing
When it comes to the drafting content for the blog committee, I go back to the drawing board. Each week, I am assigned to write a blog post; developing fresh ideas for the Chapter’s blog keeps me on my toes and allows me to express myself creatively.
Working alongside the blog committee pushes me to improve my writing skills. Having a second pair of eyes looking over my writing and providing feedback helps me perfect my craft.
Attending Meetings
It is time for my favorite part of the day: meetings. Meetings vary from weekly checkups, coffee chats or joining a committee touch base. Depending on the meeting, I take notes, ask questions and offer ideas. While each meeting is different, I learn more about the chapter members' unique responsibilities and roles
I especially enjoy coffee chats, as I get the chance to learn more from individuals in the chapter and their experience as PR professionals. Having members offer guidance, professional experiences and resources allows me to grow as an intern.
Preparation for Tomorrow
What do you know? It is 1:30 p.m.! Before I cap off the day’s work, I finish any projects I am working on and start preparing for tomorrow. I start by writing down what I have not completed. From there, I create a to-do list, so I know what to expect for tomorrow.
Each day of my internship so far has truly been worthwhile. As I reflect on my day-to-day duties at PRSA Detroit, I want to share a few tips with future PRSA Detroit Chapter interns on how to stay on top of responsibilities:
- Organization is key to staying on top of things. Having a plan will allow you to get the most out of your workday
- Start each day with curiosity and excitement. Every day there is something new to learn and benefit from
- Most importantly, have fun!
