The Power of In Person Industry Networking

In today's digital age, we often find ourselves relying on social media platforms like Meta, X, Snapchat, and TikTok to form impressions of others. We might even feel as though we "know" someone based on their online presence. But, how well do we truly know them? The reality is that meeting in person and engaging in face-to-face interactions offer a priceless form of engagement that virtual connections simply cannot replicate.
Virtual only scratches the surface
One of the most compelling aspects of industry networking is the opportunity to bring your social media profile to life. While online interactions are convenient, they often lack the depth and authenticity of real-life connections. Professional conferences, chapter meetings and in-person networking events are invaluable for nurturing those connections. These settings allow us to engage deeply, build trust, and establish lasting relationships. Have you ever met a public relations professional who did not need support? I didn’t think so…
Whether you're an aspiring professional, an intermediate practitioner, or a veteran in public relations, the best connections are still made in person. While virtual meetings serve as a valuable alternative due to distance, illness, pandemics or time constraints, they should not replace the importance of face-to-face interactions.
Recent in person success story
I recently had the opportunity to attend the Council of the Great City Schools Public Relations Executive Meeting in Seattle. I was invited to present on the topic of community engagement with a colleague I had never met in person, we initially collaborated virtually. However, when we finally met face-to-face at the conference to finalize our presentation, the magic happened.
We were able to feel the room, connect with our audience and deliver an impactful presentation that virtual interactions simply can't match. This experience embodied everything our presentation aimed to convey, such as knowing your audience, building trust, analyzing data and providing value. Yes, these elements are achievable online, but doing the work in person amplifies the effects exponentially.
When you meet someone in person, the conversation is more meaningful and deeper. The connection becomes lasting and authentic. During my time in Seattle, I reconnected with colleagues I hadn't seen in a year. Those 24 hours were incredibly enriching—we learned from each other, shared experiences, and strengthened our bond centered around communications.
Knowing the value
The challenge for all professionals is to understand the value of a strong network and the importance of in-person networking. Virtual interactions are useful, but they should complement, not replace, face-to-face engagement. The next time you have the opportunity to attend a professional conference or networking event, seize it. The benefits of meeting in person far outweigh the convenience of staying behind a screen. Accept the challenge, go network in person and share how these experiences enrich your relationships. The connections you make will be more meaningful, deeper, and lasting—qualities that are irreplaceable in both personal and professional settings, and can be used for your personal social content.
