This month, PR professionals gathered for our young professional networking event at Jimmy John’s Field in Utica. The event had a great turnout with over 30 PR professionals in attendance.
Attendees had the chance to hear an insightful presentation from PR professional Curt McAllister, Midwest Public Relations Manager of Toyota Motor North America, as he paralleled the “Five Tools” of baseball and public relations.
Five tools of public relations are:
- Writing
- Media relations
- Event planning
- Executive Counsel
-
Crisis Communications
During the presentation, Curt explains that in baseball, players must possess certain tools – including blazing speed and catching – to become all-stars. Similar to this idea, PR professionals must hold these five tools in their belt to be successful.
Food and refreshments were provided as guests watched the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers take on the Westside Woolly Mammoths.
It was wonderful to see such a diverse group of experienced and young professionals connecting and sharing wisdom. We had a mix of general members, board members, college students, interns and more joining us there.
After a very close game, the Westside Woolly Mammoths took the lead and won 9-6.
This was our first young professionals event of the year, and we hope to have another soon. We were fortunate enough to raise roughly $500 for the PRSA Detroit Scholarship Fund from ticket sales.
A huge thank you to our speaker, committee volunteers and all of those in attendance for an out-of-the-park event!
Keep an eye out for upcoming events and join us soon!

Cydney Foster is an integrative public relations major at Central Michigan University and an intern with PRSA Detroit.
