Top 7 Tips for Job Hunting

Posted on Sep. 6, 2022  /   0

Let’s face it, job hunting stinks. It’s a job all on its own. Whether a company reaches out to you directly, a colleague shares a new opportunity, or you search and apply for a position on your own, it takes considerable time and effort to learn about a position, determine whether it aligns with your professional goals, and go through the interview process.

I have personally gone through five different career moves thus far. While challenging, I’ve learned quite a bit about the job hunting process along the way. Here are a few tips that may be helpful for those searching for their next great career move:

  1. Read “Pivot: The Only Move that Matters Is Your Next One” by Jenny Blake. It’s a step-by-step guide to navigating your next career move through self-exploration.
    • “Reinvent Yourself” by James Alutcher is another book on my list that comes highly regarded for career navigation.
  2. Let LinkedIn know you’re open to recruiters reaching out to you.
    • Post that you’re open to work on your profile, if appropriate.
  3. Work with local recruiters who can assist you in your search, such as Creative Circle.
  4. Leverage your network. This means messaging former bosses, influential peers, former and current mentors, professors and more to share what you’re looking for and what your needs are.
  5. Check out local job boards such as ours (plug!), set up custom job searches in LinkedIn and make sure you’re looking at who you know at the respective organizations.
    • Other alerts via Ziprecruiter, Indeed, etc. are also helpful, but not quite as personable.
  6. Keep an eye on Facebook pages such as Motor City Media & PR Peeps or Detroit Women's Leadership Network for employers looking to hire.
  7. Know your worth and do your homework about what you deserve at this point in your career including title and salaries, based on your years of experience, skills and more. Some resources I leverage include Robert Half Talent Solutions and Creative Circle.
    • Bonus: ALWAYS negotiate during the offering phase. (Typically) The worst that happens is that the potential employer says, “no thanks,” and sticks with the original offer.

I am wishing you all the best in your job hunt. Remember that most things worth having in life require an investment of time and energy, and finding the ideal career is no exception. Stay persistent in your search and never stop learning along the way. If you need any resources from our Board, please let us know - we’re always happy to help.
