The Changing of the Guard Queen Elizabeth II

Posted on Oct. 31, 2022  /   0

The longest-reigning monarch in Britain’s two millennia of history is gone, but her legacy stays alive and well.

Given Queen Elizabeth II reigned throughout a long and – sometimes tumultuous – history, we want to take a look at her ability to communicate throughout her reign.

At the age of 16, Queen Elizabeth II was fighting Nazis during the Second World War by serving in the British military. This communicated her commitment to representing and fighting for her people.

Amid 9/11, the monarch did the unprecedented, she ordered the Coldstream Guards to play the Star-Spangled Banner during The Changing of the Guard ceremony... an event that was previously unchanged for three centuries. It was a gesture that brought Americans and Britons alike to tears and communicated our allyship.

At the age of 21, Queen Elizabeth II declared to the Commonwealth that she would spend her life in public service, and spent the next seven decades doing just that. She cared very little about public image, she cared about the Commonwealth. As PR professionals, we act similarly in providing counsel to our employers and clients to communicate their goals, mission, etc. accurately, and not seek attention for ourselves.

Queen Elizabeth II was a fascinating communicator, so I’ll let conclude with a quote from Her Majesty the Queen herself:

“Therefore I am sure that this, my Coronation, is not the symbol of a power and a splendour that are gone but a declaration of our hopes for the future, and for the years I may, by God's Grace and Mercy, be given to reign and serve you as your Queen.”
