Reflecting on the 2024 PRSA Detroit Annual Chapter Meeting

As members of the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Chapter, we are constantly learning from the ever-evolving world of public relations. This year, our journey culminated in supporting the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Detroit’s Annual Chapter Meeting—a night of networking, celebration, and inspiration that exceeded all expectations.
The event brought together PR professionals, thought leaders and practitioners across metro Detroit. From insightful presentations to meaningful connections, the evening gave us a firsthand look at the rich legacy and impact of PRSA Detroit.
The evening began with an empowering keynote address from 2024 PRSA Detroit President, TaQuinda Johnson. A respected leader in the industry, TaQuinda reflected on her presidency, extending heartfelt gratitude to the board and committee members, e who supported her journey. Her speech was a powerful reminder of the collaborative spirit that defines the Detroit Chapter.
The event also marked a significant leadership transition as Megan Bonelli was announced as the 2025 president. Megan shared her vision for the chapter’s future, emphasizing her commitment to fostering community engagement and professional development. Her goals for the coming year are both ambitious and inspiring, and we look forward to seeing her leadership in action.
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of outstanding achievements through several prestigious awards:
- PRSA Detroit Hall of Fame: Frederick "Fred" Marx (posthumously) and Michael Layne, Marx Layne & Co.
- Robert Hefty Distinguished Service Award: TaQuinda Johnson, Oakland University
- Nancy Skidmore Service Award: Maribeth Farkas, Farkas Public Relations
- Best in PRSA Detroit - Media Relations: Brittany Mobley, Eastern Michigan University/Culturit Public Relations and Design Co.
- Best in PRSA Detroit - Young Professional: Nikki Little, Franco
- Best in PRSA Detroit - Seasoned Professional: Melaine Bowers, Guru Public Relations, Events, and Concierge
- Best in PRSA Detroit - Overall PR Campaign: Bankable Marketing Strategies, LLC
- Best in PRSA Detroit - PR for Good Campaign: Lolita Cummings, APR, Eastern Michigan University
It was truly remarkable to see how award recipients have shaped the PR industry and their communities. Additionally, the chapter awarded scholarships to two exceptional undergraduate students, Liz Popovich from Wayne State University and Brooke Swanson from Michigan State University, recognizing the next generation of PR leaders.
These awards showcased the incredible talent and creativity within the metro Detroit area. From innovative media relations campaigns to community-focused initiatives, the evening highlighted meaningful contributions PR professionals are making in our community.
As we reflect on the night’s events, it was impossible not to feel inspired by the stories, dedication and innovation showcased by PRSA Detroit members. From groundbreaking media campaigns to strategic crisis management, the evening underscored the creative and community-driven heart of the PR profession.
Looking ahead to 2025, our EMU PRSSA Eleanor Wright chapter remains motivated by the leadership and legacy of PRSA Detroit. We are eager to continue pushing boundaries, fostering new opportunities and making a difference as future leaders in public relations. We plan to re-launch our Student Development Conference, a professional conference event featuring alumni working in various fields of PR. Additionally, inspired by PRSA Detroit’s outreach success, we are exploring partnerships with local nonprofits to host a collaborative campaign that supports community engagement. We are eager to continue pushing boundaries, fostering new opportunities, and making a difference as future leaders in public relations.
Attending the PRSA Detroit Annual Chapter Meeting reminded us of the importance of community, mentorship, and forward-thinking in this dynamic field. Here’s to a bright future for PR professionals everywhere!
