PR Podcasts: Benefits and Suggestions

Posted on Aug. 28, 2023  /   0

In recent years, podcast listeners have grown over 40 million in the last year, according to Exploding Topics. A lot of this growth can be tied to the shift back to “normalcy” after the height of the pandemic. People are returning to the office, school is back in session and most people have returned to their filled schedules. With this in mind, people don't have the time to sit back and consume media, so this is where podcasts come into play.

The beauty of podcasts is that you can tune in wherever and whenever you want. Podcasts can be enjoyed during your evening run, while you’re running errands or on your commute home from work. Podcasts are accessible and mostly free and they can cover a range of topics: from news, entertainment and finances to professional development.

As PR professionals, we sometimes find it hard to fit continued learning into our busy schedules. Podcasts are a convenient way to keep up with industry trends, learn new skills and to improve professionally.

Below are the benefits of podcasts for continued learning and a list you should check out.

Benefits

Greater industry knowledge

Many PR podcasts focus on industry trends and best practices. PR is constantly changing, and to remain well-rounded, we need to stay on top of industry trends. These podcasts are a great way to gain greater industry knowledge you can bring to your career. The PR Week, hosted by Steve Barrett, is a weekly podcast that shares industry news and insights. It focuses on interviews, analysis and conversations with PR experts to provide you with tips and tricks to succeed.

Another great podcast to check out is The Spin Sucks, hosted by Gini Dietrich, Founder of Spin Sucks. This is great for professionals looking to learn more about modern integrated communication methods to use in their PR strategy.

Hone in on your skills

Being a PR professional is not like riding a bike. We constantly have to work on our skills to truly master our craft. Whether it's writing, social strategy or media relations, honing in on our skills is vital.

If you’re looking to brush up on your pitching skills, We Earned Media, hosted by Britt Klontz and Jackie Lambert, is a great podcast to check out. This podcast features journalists who give a detailed look at pitches to determine what makes them compelling and offers tips for improving your pitch game.

Grammar Girl, hosted by Mignon Fogarty, is also perfect for anyone that wants to master their writing. Grammar Girl provides short, friendly tips to improve your craft and become a well-rounded writer.

Grow as a professional

While not PR-specific, growth as a professional at its core is fundamental in any industry. There are plenty of podcasts that focus on the importance of being a leader, staying motivated and giving your all professionally.

Dare To Lead and Unlocking Us, hosted by Brene Brown, are two short series that focus on what it means to be a leader and how to be courageous in everything you do. While these podcasts are not continual, you should give them a listen.

Your Next Move, hosted by Kimberly Brown, is great for the go-getter in you. This is about taking the next step in your career toward success and making moves that matter.

Next time you find some free time, make sure to check in with one of (or all) of these podcasts. Happy listening!
