Our PRSA Detroit Chapter is VERY lucky to have the support of many incredible sponsors that span crucial nonprofits, corporations, agencies, OEMs and more in our region. Today we’re featuring CKC Agency, a dynamic, highly respected, results-oriented public relations and marketing services firm. CKC Agency excels at strategically collaborating with clients to showcase their businesses, build their brands and achieve their goals. The agency, founded by Carolyn Krieger almost four decades ago, is a longtime Chapter sponsor. Here’s a little more insight about this incredible company based on our recent discussion with Carolyn!

What defines CKC Agency?

  • Passion – Our experienced team of PR professionals cares deeply about the work we do. We only take on clients that we truly feel passionate about; we must believe in their mission, products, services, initiatives and people.
  • Integrity - We operate with full integrity, honesty and morality, and I believe we have earned our stellar reputation based on this. The media knows that they can trust us and count on us to always behave ethically and professionally.
  • Creativity – The CKC Agency team consistently thinks outside of the box. There is definitely no one-size-fits-all when it comes to coming up with creative ways to tell a story.
  • Results - We are results-driven and get just as excited as our clients so about the media coverage we secure on their behalf. In fact, we recently had a front-page story in The Detroit News about one of our clients and literally could not contain our enthusiasm!

What defines you as a great leader?

I think that showing vulnerability and keeping things real are key. I model this for my daughters as well as my team. We all have tough days, go through difficult times and experience situations that may not go our way. I always say that there is a gift in everything, even though it may be wrapped in ugly wrapping paper. We are always learning, growing and becoming stronger.

What makes a great media pitch?

There needs to be a benefit to the audience. The story idea must educate, inform, entertain, inspire or resonate with the reader, listener or viewer in some way.

How did you get started in PR?

When I was a senior at MSU nearing graduation back in 1978, I truly did not know what I was going to pursue with my communications degree. I attended a career conference in Chicago and clearly remember a presenter in one of the breakout sessions stating that “If you’re creative, organized and a good writer, they need you in PR.” A lightbulb went off immediately for me. Those were three of my strongest skills and in an instant, my decision was made. After graduating, I was hired in the PR department of a small Detroit firm. Soon after, I branched out on my own and became a PR consultant. I was “wooed away” for six years and served as a radio promotion director for WNIC, WDTX and WOMC back in the mid-late 1980s. I left radio when I wanted to start a family and before I knew it, I had so many wonderful referrals to do PR that I was back running my own business again.

How do you handle challenges?

I visualize a staircase. During times when things are going well, I see myself ascending to the top. When times are more challenging, I envision moving (or even tumbling!) down a few steps. I’ve been around long enough to know that it’s not until you’re at a much higher vantage point that you’re able to have a much wider, 360-degree vantage point to see the full picture of why things needed to play out as they did. There are always reasons, lessons and growth.

What do you see as CKC Agency’s legacy?

That we are a firm with genuine heart and soul whose team works hard, has fun, achieves results and helps the greater good on behalf of our clients, the media and the public.
