How I Landed My Internship

Earlier this summer, my professor sent out an internship opportunity from PRSA Detroit. It was the Chapter’s first paid internship position and it was for the fall semester, which was the ideal time to satisfy my internship class requirement. The position was to be fully remote. I had never been an intern before, and I had been researching and applying for positions. I wasn’t confident that I would land this internship, but I was cautious in my steps on how to get it.
GETTING THE INTERVIEW
I needed to have my resume and cover letter put together for the positions I was applying for. I went to the career services at my school, and they reviewed both my resume and cover letter. They provided tips on how to make my resume fit for a public relations role since I hadn’t have an internship before. After proofreading it several times, I finally applied for the Chapter’s listing.
About two weeks later I received an email from the internship committee offering me an interview for the position. The internship committee interviewed me through Zoom a few days after requesting to chat. It was a group interview with different people from PRSA Detroit and their Internship Committee. I thought I did great in the interview, but only time would tell.
GETTING THE INTERNSHIP
A few weeks went by and I received a call and voicemail during work about the internship. Since I was unable to pick up, I received an email from a member of the committee offering me the position. I remember being so excited and accepting the offer immediately.
I had a kick-off call with my supervisor, Rachel LePoudre, APR, before the start of the school year. We discussed goals, future projects and expectations of the internship. On September 12 I started my first internship, however I joined the Board meeting the week prior to get a good sense of the Chapter, its members, and upcoming initiatives. I encourage every college student to take the leap and seek out an internship!
