Maximize PRSA Detroit Membership: Join a Committee

Posted on Dec. 20, 2021  /   0

One of the best decisions I made when I became a member of PRSA Detroit was to join a committee. It is an opportunity to team up and network with members, build camaraderie and even enhance your public relations skills.

PRSA Detroit committees

PRSA Detroit has 12 key committees including: accreditation, annual meeting, blog, diversity, ethics, sponsorship fundraising, membership, programs, scholarship fundraising, senior counsel, social media and website. Importantly, members can join a committee anytime during the year.

My experience serving on committees

I’ve served on both the programs and annual meeting committees and have enjoyed working on teams, brainstorming ideas with committee members and taking the lead on planning programs. In 2020, I helped lead the annual meeting committee in planning its first virtual event, which required some coordination with other committees.

Who leads committees?

Committees are led by co-chairs and include a board liaison who updates the PRSA Detroit Board during monthly meetings. Each committee schedules meetings as needed, these days via Zoom, to share insight and updates.

PRSA Detroit leadership

Notably, being an active member of PRSA Detroit can lead to roles on the local board and, possibly the executive board.

As a PRSA Detroit Board member, I’ve participated in important decision making on behalf of the chapter. This year, as treasurer, I provide a monthly treasurer’s report to the Board, have interacted with chapter sponsors to renew sponsorships and even had a chance to participate in PRSA national’s assembly (which gathered PRSA chapter leaders from across the country) via Zoom last month, to name a few. At the same time, I also serve on the programs committee.

Getting started

You might be thinking about the time commitment required to join a committee. Honestly, each committee has different needs. Whether you are a new professional or mid-career, I encourage you to join a PRSA Detroit committee. If you have any questions about joining a particular committee, I recommend you reach out to a co-chair. We all benefit when we work together. PRSA Detroit is a strong chapter led by dedicated public relations professionals.
