A Message from the 2022 Chapter President

Posted on Dec. 20, 2021  /   0

I recently had a conversation with a professional colleague/turned friend who let her PRSA Detroit membership lapse. She hadn’t been active in our chapter and, hence, wasn’t getting any value. As a sole practitioner, she seeks networking opportunities that will drive new business.

Isn’t networking at the top of the priority list for each of us? Whether you’re new to the profession or have 20+ years’ experience, the need to connect with other communication professionals for advice, camaraderie, collaboration and job searching never loses its merit.

I agreed with my friend that she should invest her most precious resource — time — where she’d get the most value. Being a member of PRSA Detroit — or any professional organization — pays the highest dividends based on how much of yourself you invest.

Joining an organization without getting involved at some level is like paying for that new Peloton bike along with the monthly service and never hopping on for a workout.

The best way to develop professional relationships outside of your existing virtual bubble is to actively participate in one of our many committees. It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming time commitment, and I assure you that your time will be respected and your ideas will be valued.

If you’re already a member, thank you. My ask is that you consider joining one committee. We need you, and I believe you need us too.

If you’re not a member, please consider joining and getting involved.

If you have ideas, share them so they have a chance of turning into something amazing that will benefit other communications professionals as well.

As I take on the challenge of serving as PRSA Detroit president for 2022, I’m so grateful for our board of directors, committee members and sponsors who ensure we can fulfill our mission to make communications professionals smarter, better prepared and more connected through all stages of their career.

My goal is to help more communication professionals see the value our chapter can offer by becoming involved members, like my friend who rejoined PRSA Detroit and plans to contribute her fresh ideas and talent to our programming committee.

If you’re on the fence or have questions, I would be happy and honored to chat one-on-one with anyone who has an interest or a hesitation. I’d love to hear how we can provide more value to you. Please connect with me on LinkedIn.

Michelle Gilbert is vice president of public relations for Comcast’s three-state Heartland Region, including Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky. She is the 2022 PRSA Detroit incoming president.
